Objectives and Purpose of the Job:

The primary purpose of the Process Engineer is to contribute to the efficiency and success of the oils and fats refining plant. This involves optimizing existing processes, participating in the development and implementation of projects, and assisting to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. By conducting data analysis and collaborating with various departments, the Process Engineer plays a vital role in maintaining the quality and consistency of the final product while fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the organization.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Research and develop processes to optimize productivity and workflow, which will include research and development related to new technologies.
  2. Process Optimization:
    1. Analyze new and existing manufacturing processes and procedures to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency, quality, and safety.
    1. Develop and implement strategies to optimize the performance of manufacturing processes.
    1. Collaborate with relevant teams to implement changes and improvements.
  3. Project Development and Implementation:
    1. Collaborate on the design and execution of new projects and modifications to existing processes.
    1. Ensure that projects meet quality standards, comply with regulations, and are executed within established timelines and budgets.
    1. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to facilitate effective project implementation.
  4. Data Analysis and Monitoring:
    1. Monitor and analyze production data to identify trends, potential issues, and improvement opportunities.
    1. Propose and implement data-driven solutions to maintain consistency and quality in the final product.
    1. Develop and maintain reporting systems for ongoing process monitoring.
  5. Regulatory Compliance:
    1. Ensure that refining processes comply with safety, health, and environmental standards and regulations.
    1. Stay informed about changes in industry regulations and standards.
    1. Implement necessary adjustments to processes to ensure ongoing compliance.
  6. Interdepartmental Collaboration:
    1. Work closely with production, maintenance, and quality departments to achieve common goals.
    1. Provide technical support and guidance to operational teams.
    1. Participate in cross-functional meetings and contribute to collaborative problem-solving.
  • Training and Development:
    • Identify training needs for staff involved in the manufacturing processes.
    • Develop and deliver technical training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of operational and technical staff.
    • Evaluate training effectiveness to ensure that staff members are proficient in the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation related to processes (existing, updated and new), projects, and compliance activities.
    • Generate reports on process performance, project status, and compliance metrics.
    • Present findings and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Actively contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the organization.
    • Propose and implement initiatives to enhance overall plant efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
  • Oversee project-related operations and observe the execution of facility processes.
  • Determine the organization and setup of operations for the most effective process outcome.
  • Monitor equipment efficiency including the regular testing of equipment.
  • Create and develop new procedures and processes following appropriate impact assessments undertaken.
  • Oversee the implementation of new processes and procedures.
  • Investigate and assist with troubleshooting any problem that arises with processes, procedures, and operations.
  • Conduct risk assessments of equipment and processes used to include environmental impact.
  • Contribute to the development of safety and health standards.
  • Participate in Budget preparations in the Engineering and Operations Departments/Units. 
  • Clearly communicate ideas and findings to management and colleagues on a timely basis.
  • Participate in Food Safety and Security activities when required.
  • May be asked to Act in the capacity of Production Manager.

Academic/Technical/Management: Experience and Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or related disciplines
  2. 3-5 years of working experience in a manufacturing/FMCG environment including at least 2 years as a Process Technologist/Engineer
  3. Experience in designing, installing, or maintaining mechanical/process engineering equipment/systems.
  4. Knowledge of oilseeds, fats, and margarine refining and processing is an asset.

  5. Expert proficiency in Microsoft Office, and Computerized Maintenance Management System
  6. Ability to work independently and within teams
  7. Working knowledge and understanding of scientific and mathematical principles
  8. Good analytical ability, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  9. Knowledge of Food Safety Systems
