Laboratory Supervisor

THE ROLE

The incumbent for this role will be responsible for managing the daily operations of and supervising the Analysts within the microbiology and chemistry laboratories. The Laboratory Supervisor will also be responsible for implementing and maintaining prescribed quality assurance practices to ensure accurate lab results and to ensure that products, at all stages, are compliant with the relevant specifications.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain ISO 17025 compliance by auditing for and implementing required standards.
  • Develop and maintain Good Laboratory Practices through routine verification (audits) of the program to ensure continued compliance.
  • Ensure the reliable and accurate analytical performance of the factory’s laboratories through thorough documentation, calibration of equipment, internal controls, and training of the laboratory team.
  • Coordinate the collation, analysis, and interpretation of laboratory results in order to review and identify trends.
  • Supervise and ensure all relevant analytical tests are performed on specified samples according to established frequencies.
  • Manage the acquisition of laboratory equipment and supplies and resolve any technical or administrative issues within the laboratories.
  • Assist with the management of time and attendance for the laboratory teams. This includes, but is not limited to, the preparation of work schedules, approval of timesheets, and processing of payroll.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry with a minor in Microbiology or related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a laboratory environment and demonstrated competence in supervising others.
  • ISO 17025 certification would be an asset.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

• Highly proficient in the use of the computer including the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Keen ability to communicate well with others at all levels both in writing and orally
• Demonstrated ability to lead, guide and hold others accountable
• Ability to work well in teams
• Must be able to function independently and make sound, informed decisions
